I watched The Love Hypothesis because a very dear person suggested it.
And I’ll be honest, I went in with a lot more curiosity than I normally would. Entirely because of who suggested it. 🙂
I expected a predictable rom-com, and that’s exactly what it was. You can see where it’s going pretty early on. Strangely, I didn’t mind one bit.
The chemistry
What got me was the chemistry. The awkward, overthinking girl and the intimidating, emotionally unavailable guy.
And I liked that nothing changes overnight. It’s the small stuff: the clumsy conversations, the teasing, the moments where they clearly care but have no clue what to do about it.
The first coffee date
She asks him to just act “natural and normal.” Which, for a man who looks like he’s permanently grading someone’s thesis, is apparently the hardest task in the world. Her friends walk up, he stiffens like he’s facing a review committee, and every attempt at small talk lands with a thud.
Then, to top it off, he says goodbye with the most awkward forehead kiss in cinema history while her friends just stand there, horrified.
I laughed out loud. Partly because it was funny, and partly because I think we’ve all had conversations like that. The kind where you’re trying so hard to seem normal that you forget how normal people talk.
I caught myself smiling at the screen more times than I’d like to admit. Some scenes were genuinely funny, some were ridiculously cute, and a few had me going, “okay fine, this is adorable.”
Why it works
My favourite part, though, was how it slowly moves past the “I can’t stand you” phase and shows you why they start liking each other.
Towards the end, when the banter drops and you see the insecurities both of them have been quietly carrying, it stops being just a cute story. It feels human.
Because isn’t that how it usually goes? People rarely fall for the polished version of someone. They fall for the person who stammers, overthinks, and still shows up.
Was it predictable? Very.
Did I still root for them? Absolutely.
Did I know exactly what was coming in several scenes and still wait for it like it was a plot twist? Guilty.
But maybe that’s the point. You don’t watch a rom-com to be surprised. You watch it for that warm, silly, happy feeling at the end. And this one delivered.
Some movies you watch and forget by the next morning. Others quietly attach themselves to a person, a conversation, a phase of your life. I have a feeling this one is going to be the second kind for me.
So, to the very dear person who suggested it: yes, I watched it. And yes, I liked it. Quite a lot, actually. 🙂
Hypothesis stands!
